About This Treatment

A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration that encases a damaged, weakened, or heavily restored tooth to restore its strength, shape, and function. Dr. Woodward recommends crowns when a tooth has a crack, a very large filling that compromises the remaining structure, or has undergone root canal therapy — situations where a filling alone cannot reliably protect the tooth long-term. Crowns at Forsyth Family Dental are fabricated from high-strength porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-zirconia, providing both durability and a natural appearance that blends seamlessly with surrounding teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

A traditional crown at Forsyth Family Dental requires two appointments: the first for tooth preparation, impressions, and placement of a temporary crown; the second — typically two to three weeks later — for fitting and cementing the permanent crown. Dr. Woodward checks the fit, bite, and margins carefully before final cementation to ensure long-term comfort and function.

The preparation appointment is performed under local anesthetic, so the procedure itself is comfortable — most patients report feeling pressure but no pain. Some sensitivity to temperature and pressure on the temporary crown is normal between appointments and resolves once the permanent crown is placed. Teeth that were symptomatic before crowning may occasionally require a root canal evaluation if sensitivity persists after the permanent crown is seated.

Porcelain and zirconia crowns typically last 15–25 years with proper care, though many last longer. The most common reasons for crown replacement are recurrent decay at the margin, gum recession exposing the crown edge, or fracture — all of which are minimized by regular check-ups, good home care, and wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth.
